“The biological meaning of music”

From “Introduction by the Author”

«The purpose of this study, as well as the reasons that urged me to study the Germanic New Medicine, date back to an intensive work of research into the reasons that produce the apparently most inexplicable effects, both in the cultural-musical field and in the human one; I’m talking about the effects, or symptoms, or results that, for laziness or simply for the incapability of drawing from those enlightening scientific sources that today are on the Index, we are now accustomed to dismiss with roughly satisfactory dogmas. Those who know me know the passion and obstinacy I put in “being in pursuit of the Criterion of Things” but also how naturally (and shamelessly) I have always asked myself the question all of us ask in the presence of the facts that affect our life, that constantly try to get it off the track or that get it back onto the right track from time to time. Why?
This is the simplest of the questions, the first and essential but, paradoxically, the most ignored; the question everybody gives as a dowry to one’s ambit of interest, perhaps to improve it, may be just to understand it.
Why – as a musician – a composer feels and decides he/she must write a symphony rather than a Lied? Why does he/she organize a work in do major and an other one in la minor? Why, for instance, does he/she entrust the exposition of the theme to the strings and its repeat to the wind instruments or vice versa? Why does he increase the sound mass instead of reducing it, or vice versa?
Why does Mozart decide to elevate his works to the highest heaven of joy and, immediately after make them plunge into distressing underground depths?
And, mainly, why do I “vibrate” more or less, some times yes and sometime not, together with such vibrations? »
